Big Retailers Snub Click Frenzy

Dick Smith gatecrashes the online sale with Deal Frenzy, JB HiFi has Early Bird Xmas Frenzy, while Kogan is just always in a frenzy. 

Dick Smith has decided to go it alone, launching Deal Frenzy today, selling relaunched JVC TVs, Acer Windows tablets for $298, HDMI cables for $5, PS Vita for $188 and Samsung Nexus 10 tablets for $399. 

The official Click Frenzy 24 hour sale kicks off tonight 7pm AEST for 24 hrs only. 

This year, Dick Smith decided to host its own sale in order to provide the best shopping experience we can for our customers," a spokesperson told CN. 

Last year, Dick Smith was one of the retailers involved in the first Click Frenzy online sale event, which was branded 'Click Fail' after the homepage, and participating retailers sites went into meltdown, leaving thousands with a bad taste in their mouth ,and without bargains they had hoped for.

"Dick Smith enables customers to shop in a way that best suits their needs, whether that's in store, online, via click and collect or even from their phone with Dick Smith's mobile app."

However, the retailer says it is "generally supportive of Click Frenzy and believes it is a positive initiative that can help to drive online retail in Australia."

JB HiFi got in ahead of the Frenzy pack, holding an Early Bird Xmas Frenzy last week, although did not take part in Click Frenzy 2012, which is likened to Cyber Monday in the US.

Ruslan Kogan, too, has gone it alone this year, launching its own 'Click Frenzy' event at 7 am this morning - 12 hours before the official event is set to kick off.

Kogan is selling Smart TV's, iPhone 5s and 5, Galaxy Gear smartwatches and a variety of Canon cameras, at apparently frenzied prices. 

The mouthy CEO of Kogan told Fairfax: "Click Frenzy's attempt to own the concept of an Online Sales Day would be the same as Harvey Norman trying to own the concept of a Boxing Day Sale. These sales events should happen organically with retailers responding to consumers' needs."

However, Click Frenzy co-founder Grant Arnott, insists double the number of retailers are participating in this year's event  - over 250, and says its IT systems are prepared for the internet frenzy this time round. 

Click Frenzy said that it is using Amazon Web Services and expects 1.5m-2 million consumers to hit its virtual bargain centre - less than the 2.3 million who visited Click Frenzy last year. 

Myer, OO.com.au and Teds Cameras are taking part in Click Frenzy 2013 as well as ApplianceSales Direct, Wireless 1, Dell, Kobo and Big W.   

Arnott believe the flagship event "is going to generate more buzz than ever," and claims there are more big names on board, he told CN. 

"We're predicting another record-setting spike for Australian e-commerce".
